Andrew Lloyd Webber Turns to Reality TV to Find the Cast for The Wizard of Oz

aaaaIf you know anything at all about Andrew Lloyd Webber, then you likely understand that although he is a master producer and highly regarded in the theatre world, he rarely goes about anything in a conventional manner. And now the hugely successful producer is once again making theatre history by creating reality shows in order to choose the lead role in his latest production of The Wizard of Oz.

Grab Your Tickets to See The Wizard of Oz on Stage Right Here!

How Webber is Finding Stars to Play Dorothy

In his search for undiscovered new talent, Webber first collaborated with the BBC in a British television talent series called Over the Rainbow in order to find an unknown musical talent to play Dorothy in his new stage production of The Wizard of Oz. Webber also searched for a dog to play in the role of Toto in the series. Danielle Hope was chosen for the London production, and then Webber set his sights on the North American run of the show, and teamed up with Canadian’s CBC to create another Over the Rainbow series in search of talent for that part of the tour. The end result is that Danielle Wade was chosen for the role of Dorothy, who will also star in the US part of the tour. This isn’t the first time Webber has collaborated with the BBC to find undiscovered musical talent for one of his productions. He also used the unorthodox method for finding talent for I’d Do Anything, Any Dream Will Do, and How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?

Finally, A Wizard of Oz Worthy of the Stage

In the past, productions of The Wizard of Oz have fallen flat with audiences. Most critics agree that Andrew Lloyd Webber is a master at musical theatre and taking on the challenge of “The Wizard of Oz” has certainly provided a challenge. In the past, the Wizard hasn’t been well received for the stage because of the many different acts and scenes, the theatre usually doesn’t lend itself to a true adaptation of the original 1900 book by L. Frank Baum.  Andrew Lloyd Webber hopes to change that, by adding some songs where they should have been and splitting the scenes where the tension is higher has seemed to bring to life the book. In the past, producers have simply translated the movie into a stage production and the result is less than stellar.  Off shoots such as “Wicked” are far more appealing, but carry little of the actual story from The Wizard.  Webber has changed all that by actually dissecting the film and adding more songs. The Wizard of Oz was very well received in London, where it premiered, which is making U.S. audiences that much more anxious to see this latest adaptation.

“The Wizard of Oz” is one of the most adapted stories ever written.  It has been adapted by TV, film and stage no less than 100 times. And according to sources, Andrew Lloyd Webber can’t wait to bring the show to the US. And it won’t be performed only in New York, either. Webber has been quoted as saying that the production doesn’t have to begin in New York because the American people are so familiar with the story, it can open anywhere and be successful.

mormonSan Francisco, CA.—Tickets are now available on our site for the Tony Award winning Broadway Show The Book of Mormon. But fans who plan to see the show should be warned that shows for this wildly popular musical are quickly selling out. And if you live in San Francisco, you only have a limited time to see the musical before it’s gone. It started yesterday in the historic Orpheum Threatre, and is only scheduled to be there until the end of May.

Get Your The Book of Mormon Tickets for San Francisco Here

A Long Time Coming

The Book of Mormon was written by the same writers who created the “South park” animated series on Comedy Central.   Matt Stone and Tony Parker, along with Robert Lopez, a veteran Broadway musical writer, worked on the play almost 8 years, but once they delivered it, fans and critics alike can’t stop talking about it. The development of the musical began in 2003 as the three men met every now and then to work on it. During this time, the three writers took a trip to Utah where they met with former Mormon missionaries to get a feel for the life was like. Once it was ready, the show’s producer, Scott Rudin, took the unusual step of opening the musical directly on Broadway. In the beginning, the Mormon Church issued a polite but neutral response, but then as the show gained traction and began selling out, the church began to run advertisements in the playbills.

The Story of Missionaries Gone Wrong

The story is a humorous, raunchy, and somewhat realistic look at how missionaries are sent to third world countries, in this case Uganda. The musical is a satire based on the Mormon religion. In it two new Mormon missionaries are send to a remote village in Uganda, where there is an evil leader who is creating violence, poverty, war, and famine. In addition, the people of this village are racked with the AIDS virus. The two new missionaries go into the village clueless about the resident’s struggles and try to tell them about the Mormon religion, even though one of them has never even read the book of Mormon. One, Elder Price, wanted to go to Orlando, Florida for his mission and the second, Elder Cunningham is just glad to have a new friend in Price.  Once in Uganda, they immediately meet two other missionaries who inform them that they haven’t converted a single person to Mormonism.  The play goes on from there to show how Price becomes disheartened and Cunningham, not having read the Book of Mormon, makes up stories based on his knowledge of Mormon principles and his love of science fiction.

The Musical and its Awards

The show, which is enjoying its second U.S. tour, is exactly what you would expect from Stone and Parker.  Growing up in the western states close to Utah, the writers were exposed to the Mormon religion.  The two men decided to write a musical based on the religion in their usual crass and comedic way.  The success of Stone and Parker are undeniable, with several movies, plays and of course the nineteen year run of “South Park.” All of this success has propelled them to financial and industry fame.  The pair have been awarded Tony, Grammy, and Emmy awards for their work on “South Park” and an impressive nine Tony Awards and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album for “The Book of Mormon”. In addition, the cast recording from the original cast was the highest charting Broadway cast album in more than forty years. It was so successful that it reached number three on the Billboard charts.

And About Those Tickets

Theatre goers can see the musical at the historic Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco, CA. from April 16 through the end of May.  Tickets are on sale now and can be bought at TheatreTicketBank.com, but we don’t expect them to last long. Keep in mind that we don’t only sell tickets to musicals. We offer first rate seats to all types of theater events, and even more, we keep you updated on what’s going on in the industry. Jason Alexander Returns to the Broadway Stage in Fish in the Dark

fishIf you’re a Seinfeld fan, do we have news for you. Jason Alexander, who played the role of George Costanza in the hit comedy Seinfeld, has agreed to return to the Broadway stage and take over the role of Normal Drexler in the Broadway hit Fish in the Dark. The play starts March 31, but until June 9, Larry David, the show’s playwright, stars as Drexler himself.

Get Tickets to See Jason Alexander’s Return to Broadway June 9 in Fish in the Dark

The History of Alexander and David

What makes this announcement so exciting is that the writer of the play, Larry David, also wrote Seinfeld. In fact, it was the role of George Costanza that lured Alexander away from the stage as he become a huge star in Seinfeld. It is said that David based Alexander’s character, George Costanza, loosely on himself. Jason Alexander hasn’t been on stage since 1990 when he played in Accomplice, and the year before that, he won a Tony Award in 1989 for his role in Broadway playing Jerome Robbins.

Tickets to See Jason Alexander’s Broadway Comeback are Limited

From now until June 9, Larry David will play in the role of Normal Drexel, but on June 9, Alexander takes over the role. When asked how he felt about Alexander taking over for him, David said that he is thrilled because now he can finally enjoy the show.

Although Fish in the Dark begins March 31 and runs through July 31, if you want to see Jason Alexander in the leading role, you’ll have to plan to attend on June 19 or sometime after that. But if you want to see his historic return performance, we highly recommend that you reserve your tickets now. As of this writing, there are only 116 seats left for Alexander’s first night in the role. So if you’re serious about seeing his Broadway comeback, you better act quickly.

See How Many Tickets Are Left to the June 9 Performance Here!

The Set

According to reviewers, the production team held nothing back on the set design for Fish in the Dark. It is said to be majestic, while keeping a cartoonish quality to it, which blends beautifully with the deadpan style of humor that David is so well known for. The costumes were created in a way that makes the actors look and feel like real people—who just so happen to be up on stage.

Seinfeld Fans Will Love Fish in the Dark

Critics say that Fish is the Dark has the same style of comedy that made Seinfeld such a runaway hit. In fact, one reviewer said that the play is the love child of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, both conceived and written by David. The play centers around Normal Drexel, who is a middle-aged urinal salesman whose dad is about to die. As the dad is lying on his deathbed, he makes Norman and his brother promise that one of them will allow their mother to live with them for the remainder of her life.  But the father’s intentions were clear about who wanted the mother to live with, and the task falls on the hapless Drexler and his poor already overburdened wife. Norman, who is socially inept, manages to alienate everyone around him except for his housekeeper, who is keeping a major secret about her 20 year old son.

The Reviewers Pronounce it a Hit

The reviews for this play are in, and critics say that if you’re a fan of Seinfeld, you’re going to love this play. And they seem to be right as tickets are flying out the door for the theatrical production. But remember, if you want to see Jason Alexander on his Broadway comeback appearance, don’t wait because the tickets won’t last long.

Finally, a Revival of Les Miserables That is Worthy of its Name

les mizIf you were disappointed by the 2006 revival of Les Miserables, you weren’t alone. It seems unfathomable that a classic musical this fantastic was met with such lukewarm enthusiasm. It caused many people to believe that no one would ever top the original production of the novel, which was so well received that it ran for sixteen years on Broadway. If you’re one of the people who thought they would never see the magic of Les Miserabales again on stage, we have great news for you. This year’s revival of the dark, revolutionary play is catching the excited attention of critics and theatre buffs alike. And to make things even more magical, the musical will show at New York’s Imperial Theatre from now until May 8.

Reserve Your Seats to See Les Miserables at the Imperial Theatre in New York Now!

The Story

The story of Les Miserables hasn’t changed, not even in this risk taking production of it. The story is about Jean Valiean, who steals a load of bread and is sentenced to an unjust nineteen years for the crime. Ramin Karimloo plays the part and it is said that he sings with such force that his character is entirely believable. Inspector Javert, who is the inspector who is in pursuit of the fugitive Valiean, comes across as a hard driven character who vows to chase down Valiean no matter what. He will do it even if it takes him the rest of his life. Javert is fiendishly played to perfection by Will Swenson.

Adding to the dark and dreary story is a cast of martyrs who suffer and die for causes that they consider to be righteous. For example, Fantine, who is played by Cissie Levy, dies on behalf of all the women who are forced to sell their bodies just to survive in the barest kind of way. And there’s Eponine, who is played by Nikki James. She suffers greatly because she is in love with Marius, but that love is not returned. In the end, she dies in a street battle while trying to save his life. And children suffer too in Les Miserables when thieves take advantage of them.

With all of this suffering and darkness, the musical Les Miserables could have been easily overwhelmed and put under a cloud. But directors James Powell and Laurence Conner don’t let that happen. Instead, the heroic actions of the characters overshadow the dark intensity that the production is so well known for.

The Set

The directors took great liberties with the set, and this also sets this year’s production apart from productions in the past. Rather than use an ornate set, they chose to limit the palette to grays and blacks, with only one other color the entire time: a red flag that the rebels carry together to the barricade. The overall feel of the production is off darkness and depression, but the epic style story somehow makes up for it all. Overall, the directors took great risks with such a classic, which could have been a disaster. But it wasn’t. And if you are a fan of Les Miserables, this is definitely a revival you won’t want to miss.

The Theatre

The Imperial Theatre was designed by Herbert Krapp, in what has become his trademark Adam style. The theatre boasts ornamental panels which are designed with floral and geometric motifs, and a dramatic recessed ceiling. The theatre is wider than deep, which allows more of the audience to feel closer to the stage. The theatre has been host to a slew of big names and starts, including Moss Hart and Cole Porter, Mary Martin, and Gene Kelly.

The Tickets

At TheatreTicketBank, we highly recommend that if you want to see Les Miserables in the historic Imperial Theater, you get your tickets early because while we may see another revival of the great classic at some time in the future, chances are, it won’t be nearly as memorable as this one. And don’t be concerned if you hear that tickets at the Imperial Theatre are sold out because we typically have seats when other ticket sellers are already sold out. You can check our availability now, but keep in mind that it will change constantly, so if we don’t have any now, check back with us in a few days.

Stay up to date with the current happening of Les Miserables, along with all the other productions by checking in frequently with our blog, and social media accounts like our Facebook, Twitter and Google+ pages. Want to See On the Twentieth Century? The Broadway Production is Sold Out, but There’s Still Hope!

20thIt only happens once in a while that a show comes along and turns Broadway on its head. Well, it’s happened again, and this year’s hit is pulling out all the stops. It has award winning actors and actresses, a hilarious script that has audiences rolling in their seats, a dazzling set that is simply breathtaking, and the critics singing its praises all over town. We’re talking about the hit of the season On The Twentieth Century, which is playing in New York City at the American Airlines Theatre from March 18 through April 29. And now the hit show has just made the news again by selling out 103 percent of its available seats. It’s no wonder as critics everywhere are giving the show fabulous reviews. Online ticket seller TheatreTicketBank says that if theatre goers want to get seats to this year’s hit show, they likely are going to have to get them through a secondary market ticket seller.

Check Ticket Availability for On the Twentieth Century Here!

Why is the Show so Popular?

It seems that the critics are having almost as much fun thinking up new ways to describe the show as the characters are having playing the roles. The show is has been called ridiculously sublime, the show of our dreams, and Broadway musical bliss by some of the most well known critics around. Others call it a top of the heap musical, an alchemical fizz of operetta style melodies and it’s said that the actors have a giddy gift for showbiz satire. The story takes place in the 1930s on a luxury train, decorated in art deco, that is traveling from Chicago to New York City, and is full of laughs as the train rolls on. In it, a theatre producer who has lost everything (played by Golden Globe winner Peter Gallagher) does everything he can to talk a glamorous Hollywood starlet (who is played by Tony and Emmy Award winner Kristin Chenoweth) into staring in his new drama. The pair used to be lovers, which only adds to the comedy. The problems is, no such drama exists. Audiences sit through the musical romp and wonder whether he will convince her to take the nonexistent role, will find time to write the play, and if he’ll be able to come up with the money to bring the show to the stage—all before the train reaches it destination.

The Actors Who Make it So Special

The role of the starlet was originally played by Madeline Kahn in 1978 on Broadway, and Chenoweth, who plays the role now, is stirring up quite a bit of attention. She has been called a stick of blonde dynamite, a virtuoso comedian and singer, among others things. One reviewer said that she uses her petite body, ample bosom, and middle finger for a laugh. And the audiences agree.

The broke but persistent theatre producer, played by Peter Gallagher, could have easily been overplayed considering the absurdity of his character, but critics and audiences agree that he played the part perfectly. But he’s not alone in his pursuit of the starlet. A rival producer, played by James Moye, also wants the starlet to play a part in his production about high society. She will have to choose, and in the process, the production takes hilarious spins and dives, including wonderfully choreographed numbers like the four tap  dancing porters who delight the audience.

The supporting actors add just as much fun to the show as the stars. Mark Linn Baker and Michael McGrath are the producers right hand men, while Mary Louise Wilson plays a fanatical, slightly luny millionaire who promises to fund the non-existent play. And the starlet has her own right man in Andy Karl, who plays her traveling boy toy.

Tickets are Hard to Find

Since the production is booked at over 100 percent of capacity, we at TheatreTicketBank recommend that people look for tickets at secondary ticket markets like ours, as we oftentimes have seats when other ticket sellers are already sold out. You can check our availability now, but keep in mind that it will change constantly, so if we don’t have any now, check back with us in a few days.

Stay up to date on this show and all the others by checking in frequently with our blog, and social media accounts like our Facebook, Twitter and Google+ pages. We’ll keep you in the know about On the Twentieth Century, and all your favorite productions.

It’s Snowing in Houston, Texas? It is When Disney on Ice Frozen is In Town

frozenThe last time it snowed in Houston, Texas was in 2008, and it surprised most long time residents as it hadn’t snowed in the deep south Texas city in about 60 years. But residents are about to be surprised again next month when Disney on Ice’s Frozen comes to town—and brings bucketfuls of snow with it.

Get Tickets to See Disney On Ice Frozen Right Here!

An Icy Performance

That’s right, Disney on Ice Frozen is coming to Houston Texas April 15, bringing with it a show that includes snow falling from the ceiling throughout the entire performance. The children’s much anticipated show will give twelve performances, with the last one ending on April 20. And judging from the buzz that the show has created with both children and adults, Houstonians better prepare for a night of excitement and entertainment that outshines even the most popular Disney shows. And of course, they better wear their snow boots.

Frozen will take place in the NRG Stadium, which is famous for its retractable roof and the fact that it appears to glow from within when it’s dark outside—a perfect setting for a magical show. The stadium has hosted other great kid friendly acts like One Direction and is scheduled to host the Super Bowl in 2017.

The Rave Reviews Keep Coming In

The show, which is based on the world’s highest grossing animated movie, also named Frozen, has received some pretty amazing reviews. People who have seen the show say that the costumes are colorful and exotic, and are the perfect contrast to the thousands of twinkling lights that adorn the set. Add in the glimmering ice floor and snow that falls from the ceiling throughout the performance, and it’s no wonder that kids sit with their eyes shining with excitement the entire show. The performance opens with Elsa as she is hiding in her room talking to a magical troll. Unlike the movie, this performance doesn’t include the adults in the opening scene, and if you haven’t seen the movie, it might be confusing. But really, is there a child alive who hasn’t seen Frozen, the movie? As those who are familiar with the movie will understand, Elsa has been isolated from other people because of the magic power she has of freezing everyone and everything around her.

The Costumes and the Set

There has been much written about the impetuous dancing by the character Anna, and the costumes of the trolls, Sven the reindoor and the Marshmallow snow monster. And according to those who have seen the show, when Olaf finally appears in after the intermission, the kids in the audience go wild. Many reviewers have also noted that it’s not only the kids who sing along to all of the well-known songs, but a few adults have been spotted gleefully singing along, as well.  All of this magic is set against the breathtaking backdrop of Elsa’s frozen castle, which is constructed entirely of twinkly lights.

Although the show is about the movie Frozen, other Disney characters make an appearance to get kids an extra delight. They’ll see characters from The Lion King, Toy Story, and Finding Nemo. In addition, Micky Mouse will make an appearance in the beginning of the show.

It’s Smart to Reserve Tickets Early

According to critics, Disney has truly outdone themselves with this magical show, and as such, tickets will be harder to find as performance dates draw closer. As for Houston, there are only twelve chances to see this wonderful performance on ice-and to experience snow for the first time in years.  At TheatereTicketBank, we know the disappointment kids feel when their parents can’t get tickets to a show they want to see. And although we typically have tickets to sold out shows, once they’re truly gone, there is simply no way to see the show. Don’t let your kids be disappointed, but get your tickets today.

hartAre you in the mood for a night filled with comedy by a host who has been so successful he has starred in major films and even appeared on Saturday Night Live? If so, you should think about getting tickets to see this hilarious comedian. Kevin Hart is one of the hottest tickets on the secondary ticket market. And at TheatreTicketBank, we can tell you that the average price for Kevin Hart tickets beats out some of the hottest musical acts, including Ariana Grande, Kenny Chesney and Foo Fighters. This makes tickets to see the funny man among the most desired event tickets of the year so far.

Click Here to Buy Kevin Hart Tickets!

The What Now? Tour is On the Comedy Express

Tickets for the What Now? tour went on sale February 19, and the show is so popular that many venues for the forty-five city tour sold out within minutes. But the comedian’s popularity on the comedy tour circuit isn’t a surprise to anybody. The 35 year old Philadelphia actor has made a huge splash in entertainment circles since he first got people’s attention in 2002. Over the span of his career, he has starred in nearly forty films, some of which are, Think Like a Man, and Ride Along. In addition, he gave stellar performances in some of his supporting roles in such movies as The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Little Fockers, Along Came Polly, and This Is the End. All of these roles have made him one of the most well known names in the entertainment industry.

But Hart hasn’t just stared in films. In addition to his acting roles, he has spent some very successful time on the comedy tour express. For instance, Hart has launched three separate comedy tours since 2009, and his 2011 tour, “Laugh at My Pain,” grossed more than $15 million in ticket sales. A live documentary film that showcased the comedian’s Los Angeles appearance on that tour brought in nearly $8 million in box office sales.

And finally, the comedian created and stars in BET network’s Real Husbands of Hollywood, and makes frequent appearances on such shows as Modern Family and Saturday Night Live. His rapid-fire comedy routines are staples of late-night television, with appearances on the regular late-night lineup with Jimmy Fallon, Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel and David Letterman. Hart has won the Best Actor trophy in the 2012 BET Awards, and the Entertainer of the Year Award in the 2014 NAACP Image Awards. And as if it couldn’t get any better, Hart will be in the middle of his tour when his latest movie, “Get Hard,” with co-star Will Ferrell, will debut on March 27.

Shows are Selling out Quickly

As you can imagine, the awards and activity have built a tremendous fan following for Hart, and it shows in the prices that Kevin Hart tickets command on the secondary market. Online finance website Forbes.com is reporting average ticket prices of about $200 per seat for his shows, but that’s just the beginning of the story. The truth is that premium seats for one of Hart’s events can be considerably higher, while many venues still have seats available at about half that price. And it’s also important to know that tickets for Kevin Hart are scarce for some of the better-known venues, so if you have your heart set on seeing him at a certain location, you should check the inventory quickly. Our inventory for tickets tends to fluctuate because we are a secondary ticket market, and that means that if you can’t find the tickets you’re looking for on the first try, you should check back frequently because we add new listings all the time.

And we don’t only sell tickets to comedy shows. We offer first rate seats to all types of theater events, and even more, we keep you updated on what’s going on in the industry. We maintain a blog that informs our readers about the latest shows and events, and also keep our fans updated on our social media channels. For instance, you can like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, and join us on our Google+ account. Just think—you’ll never have to be in the dark again about what’s happening in the theatre world.

So, are you in the mood to laugh? If so, check in with our website and see if you can find some Kevin Hart tickets that are still available in your area. But you better do it fast!

Tickets are Selling Quickly for the Blue Man Group After Chris Wink’s Interview

blue manAs if the Blue Man Group wasn’t already one of the hottest tickets in town, the recent interview done by the group’s co-founder Chris Winks, has spurred them on to even greater heights. In fact, in addition to their nationwide popularity, the popular ensemble theater troupe, Blue Man Group, is selling out shows at the Monte Carlo Theater in Las Vegas. The upcoming show on March 25 will highlight new routines, skits and props, in addition to the other parts of the show that has engaged audiences across the country. At Theatre Ticket Bank, we know that one of the reasons ticket sales have picked up so much is because of the group’s recent interviews and revelations about the refreshed routines. After all, if the news is that a great show is about to get even better, who wouldn’t want to see it again? And again, and again, and again.

Get Tickets to See Blue Man Group in Las Vegas Here!

Why the Interviews Affected Ticket Sales so Much

Chris Wink, the Group’s co-founder recently told a Boston magazine that their newest marketing campaign is about the Blue Man Group “coming clean.” The campaign is centered around the slogan “Dare to Live in Full Color,” and is about the group’s mission, which is to inspire audiences, open their eyes and energize them to live life fully. Wink said that audiences who haven’t seen the show in a while will see lots of new material because the show changes and morphs frequently. The intention of the Dare to Live in Full Color campaign is to promote the idea of live experiences, going out and seeing theater, sports, and art. In other words, the show’s goal is to cause the audience to go beyond their typical comfort zone and walk away with a new outlook on how they should live their lives.

What About the Las Vegas Show?

While the marketing campaign focuses on Boston, its message is also relevant to Las Vegas, where Blue Man Group is a staple at the Monte Carlo Theater. The March 25 show will include many new themes and bits that incorporates pop culture and technology. It’s all in an effort to inspire audiences to go out and create. According to Wink, The Blue Man Group is a show that changes to stay the same. The most recent iteration of the Blue Man Group experience includes a giant drum, DigiPads, the ever-present PVC pipe and a lot of audience participation. In addition, there are a few surprises that you’ll only be able to see if you book tickets to the show.

The Blue Man Group show is one of few completely family-friendly experiences in Las Vegas, which means you can take the kids to see it without fear of them hearing something inappropriate. The show is best-known for its slogan, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” but when it comes to the Blue Man Group performances, the ensemble hopes that the exact opposite is true. They want their audiences to be energized and inspired to take what they feel and experience home with them, and then put it to good use in their daily lives. The hope is that those who are part of the Blue Man Group experience will be inspired to create beauty and inspiration in their own lives.

Where to Buy the Tickets

Tickets to the March 25 Blue Man Group show at the Monte Carlo are a hot item on third party ticket broker sites like ours at Theatre Ticket Bank. Remember, ticket availability varies from day to day, and we have definitely seen a jump in interest for the show since the Wink interviews. Fans who want to book Blue Man Group tickets for that show should check frequently as our inventory changes constantly. And if you can’t get tickets to the March 25 show date, be sure to check our site for other dates as the show plays on more than one date in Las Vegas.

Do You Have Your Tickets to See Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story? We Have Them!

220px-Buddy_Holly_croppedThe national tour of the hit Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story is playing to standing room only audiences across the country. The popular show kicks off January 18 in Springfield, MA, and there are already hints that tickets for the big Silver Anniversary US Tour will be at a premium—and very difficult to find–for many of the show’s stops. At TheatreTicketBank, we’re seeing a lot of activity and interest in tickets for the rock and roll musical, and while we still have available ticket for nearly all upcoming shows, past history suggests that fans will snap them up quickly. That’s why we’re recommending that if you want to see this huge hit, you should get your tickets early. At it stands now, we still have great seats to most of the shows, but they won’t last long!

Why is the Show So Popular?

The current US tour of “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story” celebrates the Silver Anniversary of the show. The show has been called the world’s most successful rock and roll musical, and is typically acknowledged as the first jukebox musical after it opened in London’s West End in 1989. In the 25 years since, the show has been seen by 22 million people in more than 23,000 performances. It has been performed on stages from London to Broadway to Singapore, as well as Australia, Japan, Scandinavia, Germany and many other countries. The 11-week U.S. tour will crisscross the nation, hitting stages in 34 cities including theaters in Connecticut, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, California, South Carolina and Tennessee. The production has been credited with originating the jukebox bio genre, which has spawned a line of successful musicals, including Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia and We Will Rock You.

What is the Buddy Holly Story?

The show examines the life and career of musician and performing artist, Buddy Holly. His career, which was cut short by Holly’s untimely death in 1959 at the age of 22, changed the face of rock and roll, and his music served as inspiration for many of the great musical artists of the 1960s, 1970s and on into the current day. The show tells the story of Holly’s meteoric rise to fame through the lens of his music. It features many of his big hits, including “That’ll Be the Day,” “Peggy Sue,” “Oh, Boy,” and The Big Bopper’s “Chantilly Lace.” In fact, his talent was such a force that critic Bruce Eder calls Holly the single most influential creative force in early rock and roll. He is credited for influencing musicians such as the Beatles, Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones. Rolling Stone Magazine lists Buddy Holly as number 13 on their 100 greatest artists of all time. But his career came to an end on February 2, 1959 when he chartered a small plane to take him to a concert. The pilot, who was not certified to fly by instruments only, took off during bad weather, and the plane went down, killing all on board. What’s even more sad is that no one saw the plane crash, so Holly, his band members and the pilot all laid dead in the snow overnight until there were discovered the next day. Holly had been married only a few months earlier, and when his wife heard the news, she miscarried their baby shortly after. The miscarriage has been blamed on psychological damage from hearing of her husband’s death.
