Annie Revival Is Revived

Back in 2012, Broadway theatergoers had high, high hopes for “Annie, The Musical,” a revival of the original Broadway sensation. The hopes crashed amid very tepid reception from the NY critics – audiences just weren’t wild about a darker, more realistic Hard Knock Life, and they didn’t line up to beat down the doors. Not about to throw more money after a losing proposition, the production company scrapped its plans for a national tour during the 2014-15 touring season.

That didn’t sit well with the fans, nor with the creators of the production. In a rare move, the original creators came together to mount a tour on their own. Audiences who attend the touring production of “Annie” won’t be seeing the bleaker, seamier side of the sunshine-y little redhead. Instead, the company is bringing back a lot of the original staging, choreography and book to give audiences what they’ve always loved.

Annie Fun Facts

It won’t be the first time that the “Annie” creative team has overcome adversity. The original 1977 production almost never saw the stage at all after being turned down by 23 different producers. The last producer had the good sense to see the potential and brought it to the stage, where it won Tony awards for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Choreography. The creative team responsible for all those awards is back together for this road tour of the revived production, bringing their deft touch to the iconic story of the New York orphan who charmed a millionaire.
