If you love Disney’s Aladdin – and who didn’t fall head over heels with Robin Williams’ wise-cracking genie? – Aladdin the Musical is a total must-see. From the moment the show opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre, Aladdin has had critics enthralled and audiences totally wowed and wooed. The familiar story plays out differently on stage with live actors instead of cartoon animations, but it’s an experience you and your kids (borrow some if you have to!) will never forget.

Disney’s Aladdin – Fun for All

NYT theater critic Charles Isherwood is not known for gushing. He can go all Simon Cowell on a production at the drop of a theater ticket. So when he starts waxing poetic about “breezy insouciance” and “exuberant, extravagant musical numbers,” you can bet you’ve got a rollicking good time of an afternoon. Isherwood pays credit to the clever script with its sly innuendos, to the score and choreography that references everything from country square dancing to modern-day Bollywood, and to the score, which includes all the songs your kids know by heart, along with a nicely rounded helping of songs that didn’t make it into the movie and a few that were written specifically for the stage play.

Best Performances in Aladdin the Musical

Robin Williams’ voice was a tough act to follow, but James Monroe Iglehart has done a better than admirable job of playing the role of the Genie in the stage production of Aladdin, the Musical – such an admirable job, in fact, that he won a 2014 Tony award for it. His frenetic dancing and impeccable timing keep the whole house laughing and applauding throughout the show. The production also boasts a second Tony award nominee, Jonathan Freeman, who voiced Jafar in the Disney animation reprises the role and breathes new life into the live version of the sneaky, slimy Grand Vizier.

Don’t miss out on a chance to make lifelong memories for your kids – or yourself – with an afternoon or evening performance of Aladdin the Musical. Tickets to 8 NYC shows go on sale Monday 8/11 at 9 a.m. Grab them here while they’re hot!
