Beautiful: The Carole King Musical – Feel the Earth Move in New York

Let the New York Times make snide jokes about AARP memories all they want. The fact is that Carole King did write the soundtrack of our lives, and her music has stood the test of time. The proof of that is in the audiences that pack the Sondheim for “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical”, which range across all age groups and demographics. The Broadway musical tells the story of King’s journey from self-effacing songwriter to star in her own right, and it tells it with a liberal sprinkling of the Top 40 hits she wrote and performed. The show is jam-packed with chart-toppers that connect the story, and those hits are more than enough to make this show a must-see for anyone who loves the music. Tickets to “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” sell like hotcakes and the seats fill up fast. Tony Award Winner

And speaking of snide NYT theatre critics, want to bet he’s eating his words now? After the NYT panned the show with faint praise – referring to it as a female version of Jersey Boys and wisecracking that it was making money by catering to the AARP set – lead Jessie Mueller, who turns in a more-than-credible performance as the young Carole King, scored a 2014 Tony for Best Actress in a Musical. Her performance is a highlight of the show as she traces the journey of a young woman through the bumps and rocky road along the road to success.

And just in case you think that’s a fluke, “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” also scored a Tony for Best Sound Design. How could it miss when it features such hits as “(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman”, “I Feel the Earth Move,” “You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” and, of course, “Beautiful?” Other awards included Outstanding Feature Actress in a Musical (Annika Larson) and Outstanding Sound Design in a Musical from the 2014 Drama Desk Awards.
