After the NYT panned the show with faint praise – referring to it as a female version of Jersey Boys and wisecracking that it was making money by catering to the AARP set – lead Jessie Mueller, who turns in a more-than-credible performance as the young Carole King, scored a 2014 Tony for Best Actress in a Musical. Her performance is a highlight of the show as she traces the journey of a young woman through the bumps and rocky road along the road to success.
And just in case you think that’s a fluke, “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” also scored a Tony for Best Sound Design.
