Elf the Musical Brings the Magic of Christmas to Your Town – You Should Be There

In 2003, Will Ferrell created a new, modern Christmas tale and captured an intergenerational audience with his portrayal of Buddy, the little Santa Elf who actually wasn’t. In an unusual reversal, “Elf” the movie spawned “Elf: The Musical” – something that generally only works for Disney. It definitely works for “Elf: the Musical” which has quickly become a family holiday favorite both on and off Broadway. If you like light-hearted, witty repartee that’s edgy enough to amuse adults but entirely appropriate for children of all ages, “Elf” is your holiday show. Tickets to the “Elf: The Musical” tour are available now, but with limited engagements in most cities, they sell out fast.

Slick Production, Warm Heart

“Elf” is a worthy successor to such popular family favorites as “Miracle on 34th Street” and “One Magic Christmas,” stories that turned on recovering the magic of Christmas through a child – or child-like spirit. No one could possibly be more childlike than Buddy, raised as an elf among Santa’s elves, who finds himself having to adjust to his bah humbug human family in modern-day NYC. There are jokes and name-checks galore in the fast-paced musical that hums with show-stopping production numbers and sly, snarky in-jokes that never quite get old.

Despite the slick production values and glitzy musical numbers, though, the musical – which debuted on Broadway in 2010 – retains the warm heart and sweet innocence that makes a Christmas story an instant classic. While the critics’ reviews were mixed for the show’s Broadway run, the national tour productions – both the Equity and the non-Equity editions – are rapidly becoming a holiday tradition for families around the country.

Who Should See “Elf: The Musical”?

You. “Elf” brings the magic of the movie to life on in a live stage production that tones down the film’s over-the-top silliness and adds a touch of charm that you’ll only find in theater. You should go on your own. You should bring a date. You should go with friends. You should definitely, most definitely take your kids. Whether you’re already in the Christmas spirit or trudging through the season in your best bah humbug style, “Elf: The Musical” is precisely what the doctor ordered to reawaken your Christmas wonder.

“Elf: The Musical” is playing on two separate tours – an Equity tour that hits most major cities in November and December, and a non-Equity tour that will play many smaller cities across the country.
